Calling all high-school students interested in Computer Science!

Are you interested in Computer Science?  Do you want to explore Computer Science topics in a fun, supportive environment?  This summer St. Scholastica is offering the following introductory Computer Science course:

CIS 2085 - Programming I, 4 credits

Course Description: Students examine the nature of programming and its use in solving real-world problems.  Students learn the basics of functional programming, including variables, input/output, loops, methods, and arrays.  The course is taught in Java, and the skills learned can be transferred to any other functional programming language.  The course is taught in a supportive environment, and no prior knowledge is necessary.  Students will frequently work in pairs and get to meet students from other schools with similar interests.

Details

The course will be offered in an 8-week summer session, starting on June 16th.  We will meet every Tuesday, 2-4pm on St. Scholastica’s Duluth campus.  You are welcome to attend regardless of your interest level.  Maybe you just want to experiment with Computer Science topics in a pressure-free environment.  Maybe you want to take a deep dive into specific topics.  All are welcome.  This course is not offered online - all class meetings are in person.

College Credit

At the end of CIS 1001, those who choose to may take an exam on August 11th to earn 4 college credits from St. Scholastica (must receive a C on the exam).  You must have attended at least 6 classes to take the exam.  See FAQ for specific rules.

Cost & Schedule

There is no cost to attend the courses or to take the optional exam.  Class meetings are every Tuesday between June 16th and August 4th, 2-4pm.  The exam for college credit (which is optional) will take place on August 11th at 2pm.

How do I sign up?

Register now to indicate your interest.  We will be in touch with more details and a parent permission form.  We encourage you to register even if you are not sure yet if you will participate.  You can withdraw at any time.  Please note that we need a minimum of 14 students to offer the course.  The course is capped at 24 students.

Is there a deadline?

Please register as soon as possible. 

Teacher

The course is taught by Kris Glesener, Computer Science Department Chair.  He has 14 years of teaching Computer Science at the college level.  Students will learn in a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment.  It is also a great chance to try out a college learning experience.
