Nonprofit Finance
Money and mission are inextricably intertwined, and the most successful organizations know the value of learning their way around their finances. Most people who get involved with a nonprofit do so because they are passionate about the mission, not necessarily because they have all the management skills required for success. As a nonprofit staff or board member, you want your nonprofit to thrive. Your organization will be better prepared to achieve the mission if you understand how the money and mission work together.
This workshop is designed to make you more comfortable with nonprofit finance. Participants will walk through nonprofit financial reports including the statement of activities and statement of financial position. You will gain an understanding of nonprofit finance terminology, cash flow, reserves and endowments, staff and board roles and responsibilities. We'll also touch on the basic required filings and internal controls.
By participating in this workshop, attendees will:
Understand the key components of nonprofit financial statements.
Learn the vocabulary and have confidence to ask questions regarding the financial statements.
Understand the concepts of depreciation and endowments.
Evaluate internal controls and have some awareness of red flags for financial fraud.
Presenter Leslie Brunfelt is a CPA who currently serves as the Finance Director for the City of Proctor. Her current nonprofit roles include board member for First Witness Child Advocacy Center and Treasurer at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She served several area nonprofits in a consulting role and also served as the CFO for the Duluth YMCA. She has been part of the Be on Board series provided by the United Way and has been a trainer for the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits.
